Youth in Pune-2/8/2010
Anubhav – Journeys In A Changing India

Anubhav entails a series of four journeys to different initiatives in and around Pune, accompanied by resource persons and with supporting activities like discussions/film screenings before and after the visit. The idea for Anubhav stemmed from the realization that many young urban people had not traveled to areas that were out of their routine and comfort zones. Hence, they tended to have a one-sided understanding of issues concerning rural areas, slum development, healthcare, gender-based issues and biodiversity.

Details:Anubhav entails a series of four journeys to different initiatives in and around Pune, accompanied by resource persons and with supporting activities like discussions/film screenings before and after the visit. The idea for Anubhav stemmed from the realization that many young urban people had not traveled to areas that were out of their routine and comfort zones. Hence, they tended to have a one-sided understanding of issues concerning rural areas, slum development, healthcare, gender-based issues and biodiversity. Through Anubhav, Open Space hopes to broaden understanding of social justice issues, encourage debate, discussion and action, and also, most importantly, remind ourselves that we can have a great deal of fun even away from malls, coffee shops and multiplexes!

The tentative schedule is as follows:

Saturday 13th February: Hiware Bazaar - Understanding how Hiware Bazar managed to reverse the rural to urban migration trend in conversation with young Sarpanch Mr.Popat Pawar.

Saturday 20th February: Mumbai (Dharavi) - Understanding the politics around the Mumbai redevelopment plans and Dharavi as a case study where slum dwellers have managed to assert their stake in the process.

Saturday 27th February: Purandar - Understanding how an NGO, Masum, has managed to empower rural communities to access and demand quality basic services like health and education.

Saturday-Sunday 6th and 7th March: Bhimashankar - Understanding issues surrounding biodiverstiy and people's struggles in conservation of natural resources with Pradeep Chavan from Kalpavriksha.

All these are one-day trips except for the one to Bhimshankar where we stay overnight in the village.

Transport for all trips will be organised by Open Space.

In order to build a good understanding of the issues, we expect participants who sign up to participate in all 4 trips.
